July 2009 GMM with Tony Meloto

July 2009 General Membership Meeting.

We had a inspiring talk with Mr. Tony Meloto regarding his work with Gawad Kalinga.  During the event we were encouraged to: demand Greatness in ourselves,  inspire greatness in others, dont stoping hoping, love your country.  He shared with us the programs and activities of Gawad Kalinga not to mention his hope that by 2024 the Philippines will be a first world country, where no one lives in a shanty, and everyone dreams, hopes and creates.

“Daring Structures: Buildings That Will Make You Say, WTF!!!”

November 2008 General Membership Meeting.

I had to look up, because I could have almost sworn I was at the old AV room at the 5th floor of Melchor hall.  But I wasn’t in my old college though, and around me weren’t my old classmates, rather I found myself at Portico in Serendra with new faces from the Alabang Chapter.   But in front of us was Arch. Bronne Dytoc my old professor who had been good enough to humor our request for a seminar about structures and architecture, which was basically what we had now, “Daring Structures: Buildings That Will Make You Say, WTF!!!”

“Sabi nga ni Joseph” our current chapter president who knew I took up Arch. Dytoc’s class, if I signed up to take this seminar because I wanted to see if Bronne had new stuff?   In my head I said perhaps, but actually I just wanted to look in on the stuff I now just barely remember.

For me the greatest thing I take away from the seminars is the understanding and inspiration of the daring structures presented. That  and the explanation of  the ‘magic’ of how they work, why they work and why  architects made them that way.

Its also fun to see this all again after a few years of practice.

17th UAP Conference in Davao

(From letter of Arch. Choie Funk)

They say an experience is not over until it is shared –

for if not shared, it could be lost.

Last October 23-26, 2008, eleven of us from the UAP Alabang Chapter led by the president in office, Joseph Javier, were able to make it to the 17th National Conference of Architects held in Davao City.

This national conference would be memorable at various levels but mostly because it shall be the last.  It was resolved that from next year henceforth, only area and district assemblies will be carried on annually as well as the national convention (though on a rotational basis with regard to the venue).   Therefore, having been to this conference, we have been part of UAP history!

At the assembly of the chapter presidents, the reintroduction of the CPE, or Continuing Professional Education, as prescribed by the PRC, was also discussed more for the architect’s personal improvement, rather than as a requirement for license renewal.  These were only some of the points discussed.

Various activities spearheaded by the UAP National Headquarters, as were as raffles by the sponsors, made it worth our while. I have also been to Davao years ago and it’s nice to see it again now.  We were all so impressed at how law-abiding the Davaoenos are.  No smoking in non-designated areas lest you find yourself handcuffed and hustled away into their welcoming prison cells.

But I believe what I really took home with me was the camaraderie re-established, as it has been in past conferences, by the chapter.

Words are poor and I can hardly describe the great time, enrichment and esprit de corp built in these few days.  As always, we take the good with the bad – some inconveniences were not lacking, but all that has been overshadowed by every good thing we experienced.

But as a postscript, check out the attached video file of the Davao Wild Water Adventure participated in by Joseph, Willie, Tony, Manny, Mel, Myra (lovely wife of Elmer) and no less than Dan Carezo, our gracious Davies representative.  This one I missed for some wicked twist of fate… but the video would be enough to show you what an awesome experience it has been.  This is the smallest file at 7MB.  The bigger one, with better resolution is being uploaded in my Multiply and would be ready in the next two hours.:-)

So that’s it. We wish there were more of us and we look forward to more chances we could take part in many chapter activities.

Let me now enjoy the pomelos and the durian candies I brought home – I didn’t even know what difference there was among durian yema, pastilles, toffee…

Ciao!

23rd Anniversary Party

UAP Alabang had its 23rd Anniversary Party at the General Membership Meeting held last October 14, 2008 at Barcino’s Restaurant and Wine Bar, Bonifacio Global City, where there was a short talk on spanish wine.

Everyone enjoyed the cheese, tapa and many other items that went well with the various wines that were served.  This together with a background of each type of wine such as where they are made, in which type of glass they are best served, and what they best went together with among others.

And although no one got absolutely drunk, it was a great time as friends got together to talk and celebrate the night with great Spanish wine.
